The UIVentures program at the University of Iowa has started a venture accelerator to move “non-FDA” startups based on university research to market more quickly. The accelerator brings together several internal and outside services to speed up market entry while increasing their chance for long-term success. These include collaboration with ConnetFive, a Coralville company addressing branding and the customer’s user experience (UX), MERGE, the Iowa City incubator, ProtoStudios, a UI product on-demand prototyping design service, and a group of executive level business mentors committed to building the company’s management team and initial sales organization.
Other support includes mentor led student teams to refine everything a successful startup needs from product value propositions to business plans and investor pitches, Innovation Workshops, and industry discovery. With funding from the UIRF, grants are awarded to startups targeting their specific needs based on extensive collaboration between the founders, mentors, collaborators, and UIVentures Directors. The accelerator is educational while making a direct economic impact on eastern Iowa.
