The Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development has expanded the number of on or near-campus incubators to better support the growing number of startups. These incubators include:

MERGE, a joint collaboration between the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, JPEC, and Iowa City Community Area Development (ICAD). MERGE is for entrepreneurs and startups developing a wide range of products and services and includes the former ICAD incubator. Startups include WEB apps, software, services and engineered products. The space also houses Protostudios, a cutting-edge biomedical and electronics prototyping hub to support small businesses and train students in Iowa. MERGE will open in the spring of 2017 and is located on the Ped Mall in downtown Iowa City.
TRI is the Translational Research Incubator located on the west side medical campus. TRI is a UI business incubator/ accelerator specifically targeted toward rapidly developing, innovation-based biomedical or life-science startup companies whose technology is focused on commercial applications. Ventures are expected to graduate within one year, with a strong management team and initial capital investment. Space at TRI is limited. Applications for future cohorts are accepted through GUST.
